LYD PORT
Nordic Music Days 2021
Together Morten Schmidt (1985) and Mai Ane Pil Siedentopp (1991) create the sound duo LYD PORT. For NMD 2020 they apply for the residencies II, to create a piece in three acts for Faroese Kingo singers and electronics.
Their piece 3 is centred by the location of the church in Kirkjubøur - first act inside the church, second by the ruin and third by the seashore.
The composition will be created by field recordings as the baseline and material for vocal melodies and soundscape. The duo is inspired by the tone of the Kingo Hymns, the clear path and leading of the hymn, and the distinct quality of the melodies.
To create a futuristic poetic take on the direct and clear writing of Kingo, they will use a cut-up technique the create lyrics. Together with the cut-up texts, the duo will collect stories, of events connected to the themes of the composition, from locals with connections to Kirkjubøur. These stories will be collected by interviews or email.
The duo is taken with merging a heritage from Kingo with real stories and events from today, all melted together in a net of poems.
The three acts will have three different themes. In the church rituals and spiritualism, at the ruin cultural influence and impermanence and by the shoreline new perspectives and eternity.
The duo is captivated with melding the organic sounds of the choir with synthetic soundscapes and with extracting tone-material from field recordings when making melodies.
